Bangkok
The events and places to visit were all planned by my brother, who has been here for 5 months for his exchange. It was all thanks to him that the trip turned out extremely rewarding, for the stomach, wallet, and stuffs.

12 December 2014, Cloudy, Singapore > Bangkok
After settling everything I need to, me and my mum set off for the airport. Waited to pass a surprise card for my brother before leaving for Bangkok. The flight was slightly delayed and we only left Singapore at 11 PM.

13 December 2014, Cloudy, Bangkok
Arrived at Bangkok at 1 AM and reunited with my brother after some 5 months. Had supper by buying food from 7-11. I am just starting to get accustomed to the prices of Thailand; things sure are priced differently, and to our advantage. We stayed at my brother's place for one night. His place is so much better than mine when I was on my exchange. Woke up at 9 AM for a simple breakfast. We then walked towards Centara Watergate Pavillion Hotel to deposit our luggage, before walking around the vicinity. Had A&W for lunch, which was no longer available in Singapore since I was very young. Unique, but not that tasty since it is still fast food. We wandered to pratunam markets and then walked around in Platinum mall. This run was a recce run where I scouted shops where I will buy stuff from. After formally checking into the hotel, we walked around the shopping centres around the area. They include Central World, Siam Discovery and MBK. There was too much walking in a day, my legs felt like breaking. Dinner was at Oishi Japanese Grand Buffet.

The name and picture explains it all. The quality is really grand. It was extremely awesome and the sashimi was very fresh, making me really happy. There's fresh prawns and soft shell crabs too. The dessert was free flow Haagen Dazs ice-cream, which made me even happier. This place really brings all my favourite food into one single restaurant. The enjoyment didn't just stop here: my brother and I went for Thai massage after dinner. It was quite painful, but relaxing after the long day nonetheless. Had an early night to prepare for tomorrow.

14 December 2014, Clear, Bangkok
Started the day at Chatuchak, a backward-style market. As the taxi driver dropped us at a weird place, we had to navigate around the animal section, where we saw many... pets (?) that ranged from ultra cute to nauseatingly disgusting. Really an eye opener, but no pictures taken haha. After my brother found his bearings, we went to a local food place to try some local food: pork neck and papaya salad, pretty good. We then started to do some shopping in the area. We met our distant relatives while shopping. This was really really a great coincidence! We also tried the famous coconut ice-cream, which really does live up to its name. It really helped to cool us down since it was a hot day. We then started our buying spree at Platinum Mall (okay it was just me), which reaped really good results. Dinner was at Ban Khun Mae Thai cuisine. This is easily my favourite Thai restaurant. I had the real true blue exquisite Thai Tom Yum Goong and lemongrass water, both my favourite foods! The Tom Yum was not too spicy, which is great for my mum. The pineapple fried rice carries the fragrance of both the pineapple and the fried rice flavour, one of the best pineapple fried rice I have ever tasted. Green curry was very fragrant with light herb and mint flavours. Awesome meal at a reasonable price. After dinner, we headed to JJ Green night markets just to look. The most interesting stuff are the super retro toys and ultra old sega games, which are still functional! We had Shibuya Honey Toast at After You, Siam Paragon. Sweet sweet supper. Bought some beer back and chilled out with my brother at the hotel.

15 December 2014, Clear, Bangkok
We got addicted to cup noodles and had cup noodles for breakfast. We then took a taxi to the Chinatown of Bangkok. One word. Crowdy. Oh well, we just went there for a look. Lunch was at The Pizza Company at MBK. We then went up to the Magic Art Museum.

I just had to run away from my (mum?) because she started throwing pots and knifes at me, along with some delicious vegetables. Admittedly though, this magic art museum was below my expectations because many of its art doesn't turn out as intended in picture. We then went to Terminal 21. This shopping mall is designed with the concept of an airport and every floor is designed after a major city. Even the receptionists at the mall dress as air stewardesses! After a short walk around the mall, we took a boat to Asiatique. Asiatique was unique with its own charm. Pubs located at the front, shops located at the back. Food places and restaurants were littered around the area. Dinner was at MK restaurant. This restaurant is famous for its roast duck and steamboat. It is okay. We then had a go at the Mekong Ferris Wheel, which is small compared to our Singapore Flyer, but at least people do sit in it. Me and my brother made the ride a little bit more scary for our mum haha! We then had dessert at Mango Tango. The mangoes here are really sweet. At this point, I have gathered all the gifts I intend to give.

16 December 2014, Cloudy, Bangkok > Thailand
Woke up at 4 AM to catch the flight home. Parted ways with my brother. We'll see you again soon so don't miss us. My mum and I had an interesting experience at the airport. Tourists from China are arguing over queue. Oh well, this is what you get when you have a large crowd with little crowd control measures. We had to take the bus to the plane, which was parked somewhere in the middle of the area. What a design, Don Mueang airport. This concludes my Bangkok trip.

Someone just made me eat back what I said a few days ago. I guess we just have to strike a balance between being nice and fighting for your own good.

Thursday, October 09, 2014

All past experiences only just proves the same point over and over again. I now understand that the problem really lies in me. After doing some reading, I now know what is the best. Guess what then...
To all my 'good friends', 'brothers' and 'sisters', I am not going to be nice to you anymore. The nice person that you know will disappear. Gone were the good old days. Now, the most important letter is 'I' and the most important word is 'me'. Want a favour from me? You better be related to me by blood or screw off.

Homecoming
The exchange itself brought me many advantages. It gave me a chance to look at the world through interaction with students from around the globe. I experienced independence (although not completely economically independent). Through this exchange, I really understand what it means by having 'hard wings, you can now fly anywhere'. I no longer want to set my home in Singapore anymore. With an accent-less English, I am set on being a global citizen. I still can remember the day where I stepped through the gates of freedom. I didn't know anyone in Australia, but still chose to come here knowing that I will come here with no friends. It will be a social challenge, away from the comfort zone, face the racism. I went into my hall in ANU, B&G alone. Now, so much have changed. I now have global friends. I would say this is the greatest takeaway from my exchange. The multitude of close friends I manage to make in this short 5 month exchange is simply incomprehensible. As much as all my newly made close friends would like to keep in close contact and remain as close friends, deep inside, I know that this is no longer possible. The friction of distance really gets people. All of us will move on and make new friends (and forget some old ones) at different stages of our life. It is regretful for people who still look back and cling onto it. I shall be mentally prepared. What I will leave behind are treasure experiences and memories. As for some few friends who I will see them again in Singapore... I wish that day comes soon.
Melbourne
Melbourne is an amazing city where arts, culture and business meets.

Probably the most unplanned trip and most shaky of all, the ultimate independence with nobody to rely on (except a small meeting with Raad) and no planning done before hand. This trip was inspired because I want to meet my old JC friend Cheryl Tan, who was 'too tired' to meet up with me. People who actually helped me plan (while I was already in the trip!) were Lauren de Waal (met from ENGN4420, told me everything nice!), Karen (basic information, public transport), Andy (basic information), Anna (shopping streets) and Aman (food!). Through this trip, I also realized that the white stuff in the sea I always see were actually wavefronts, not sails. It is just wonderful that I stopped here before flying back to Singapore and ending my exchange.

7 July 2014 Clear, Sydney > Melbourne CBD, Planning Day
Woke up early to catch the flight to Melbourne Avalon. It delayed half an hour due to fog in Avalon... Seems to me that  flight delays is a rather common thing, haha. Landed safely afterwhich I arranged the only (expensive) transport into Melbourne CBD. I have a really hard time trying to figure out the public transport in Melbourne, when many people say their public transport is good. I think I am just stupid, or it was just because I relied on Google Maps too much. After very long, I finally figured out a path to get to my accommodation, but that took me 40 minutes of walking with all my luggage! When I reach the place, I wasn't very happy with the place. Its location is very bad. I guess it was a mistake to book here, Pint on Punt doesn't suit me. I quickly cancelled the booking for the next 3 days and changed accommodation to one in the CBD. Used computer for the entire afternoon. Dinner was at a Punjab cafe, was a disappointment as well. Determined to improve the trip for the next few days, I went ahead and planned for the next few days before sleeping.

8 July 2014 Clear, Shop/Eat Day
Woke up to the free breakfast. Really making my money worth it even when I made a bad decision to stay away from Melbourne CBD. Met a new friend called Mark Duffield, who travelled the world. I'll listen to his advise and go China for my next destination. Went to the post office to send a parcel to my dear friend. Saw Melbourne outside of the CBD. Pretty unique. Grabbed my luggage and went off to CBD! This time, I knew exactly how to move around and got to the CBD cheap and fast. Had KFC for lunch, wanted to see how it is here. It is amazing, it improved so much! Wandered around Melbourne CBD without worrying about getting lost, free and easy. I found the legendary large H&M outlet and it was super crowded. Ended up in Queen Victoria Markets, walked around and bought souvenirs for my dear friends. To my horror, they close at 2 PM, when I am not even done! I decided I was tired and went to check into United Backpackers. I kinda like this hostel better. The feeling is great, how you can shop till you're tired, then just walk back to your hostel and rest. I met up with Raad for dinner, but have to wait 2 more hours for dinner. What's more, I have to say no to him asking me to go to a strip club. Was rather awkward and bad. I live by my own rights and rules. There is only so much I can do for my friend. So, I went back and rested for the night.

9 July 2014, Cloudy, Eat Day
Slept in till 9 AM to recover my strength and alertness but to no avail. After breakfast, I visited the post office to send out postcards and a letter. On the way, I actually ran into John Zhang, like, what a coincidence! Took a picture and went ahead on our way. Lunch was at Don Don, pretty awesome for its price. I then went to Max Brenner chocolate bar for chocolate brownie sundae. It made me very happy! Well, it was super sinful too. I really wonder how they can make liquid milk chocolate taste so good! Bought more souvenirs, concluding all the gifts that I will buy back. Still yet to buy are more chocolates and alcohol, which I should be able to find at the airport. In the afternoon, I visited Fitzroy Gardens. No regrets. They have an amazing conservatory.

I sunk into complete relaxation as I stepped into a paradise of plants, flowers, soothing music(!) and marble statues. I guess I am a sucker to beautiful soothing music. I then moved on towards Royal Botanic gardens, where my phone died, and hence no more pictures, and navigation was done using only a map. It relives the old days without proper technology. I am glad I was still able to do it without getting lost, since it is foreign ground. While getting there, I also discovered many major landmarks such as William Darak Bridge, King's Domain, Sidney Myer Music Bowl (no spelling error). On the way back, I saw the Shrine of Rememberance, Queen Victoria Gardens, Victoria Barracks, and many other statues in between. It was another great solo walk, but no pictures to remember it by. Did the walk in the rain. On the way back, I sheltered a random stranger going to a conference. Poor her to get wet before a conference. I actually helped her find directions even when I am a tourist myself! Dinner was at The Meat and Wine Co. I was after Kangaroo meat. It feels strange going to a posh restaurant to eat alone. I am sure I got some weird judgement from the waitresses there. The meat tasted really unique. Kangaroo meat haha, nowhere else in the world. The chef did a really good job with the spices and flavouring.

10 July 2014, Rain, Travel Day
It started off with a cloudy morning. According to the tour guide and driver however, the Great Ocean Road is a road of four seasons. Sure enough, the clouds cleared as we passed by Geelong. The Great Ocean Road started its construction in 1919, took more than 30 years, and extends about 200 km.The tour is a small group tour in a van. I soon realized that most people in the group were Chinese, with one korean and two Ukrainians. We stopped by a cafe in Torquay. I had my last Flat White in Australia. Saw a rainbow along the way when we start the Great Ocean Road. It is also amazing how in each wave, a mist is made, and it has the colours of the rainbow. We made another random stop where we fed very colourful birds and saw a koala sleeping on the tree. They are all wild! Lunch was pretty little. The 12 apostles are not exactly 12. 4 are already missing, some have collapsed. This was caused by the strong waves which toppled them over. On the world map, the south side of Australia is bent in (Great Australian Bight). This is due to constant erosion from the strong large waves from the Southern Ocean.

When I was there, there was a storm going on, raging wind and rain. That did not stop me and other tourists from going in and getting beautiful pictures. I wore my 4th layer, the raincoat windbreaker and went into the storm to take pictures! It would have been nicer if it is a clear sunny day though, but I would settle for this. Totally worth the trip. Next stop is the Loch Ard Gorge, named after the shipwreck here. It is stunning as well. Foam bubbles get blown up the cliffs, creating a dreamy effect. On the way back, we stopped by Colac. Reached Melbourne CBD and went to Shanghai Street Dumplings for dinner. The waitress warned me about me ordering too much haha! The meal was great, the xiao long bao actually had soup inside. At the end, she asked me if I was full. I replied, yep, I am quite full. Satisfied with my last meal in Australia, I went back to my hostel and rested early for tomorrow's flight. Talked to some people in the backpacker hostel.

11 July 2014, Clear, Homecoming
All good byes said are instant messaging, reducing the impact of actually feeling sad that I am about to leave Australia and not come back for a long time. However, I still appreciate every little of them. Flight delayed for an hour and a half, again.

New Zealand
Admittedly, much planning was done in a rush. I planned the route of advance for South Island and left for Fiji after that, so all North Island is planned by Edmund. Impromptu planning help was given by Andy. New Zealand is full of mountains and lakes, beautiful, but grew sick of it fast too. It is amazing how New Zealand can develop while keeping the lakes and mountains so natural. The people you travel with matters a lot to the trip. Learn to see the good in everyone. I did so much driving in this trip I definitely improved a lot.

28 June 2014, Clear, Christchurch
Landed nicely in New Zealand and started planning in the airport. Did not have a good rest and it accumulated from last night, but went to Jucy and collected the car. Driving mountain road when you are sleepy is just not advised. Checked in at Point Break Backpackers, visited New Brighton pier and did groceries. Went to take Christchurch's gondola up crater rim for some scenic views. We then drove 40 km to Akaroa but it was late and we cannot do any lake activities. Dinner was shared Fish and chips, really well worth it. Had an early night since today was spent zombie-like. We sang songs along the way to keep ourselves awake along the road trips. Seems so far that New Zealand is all mountains and lakes so far.

29 June 2014, Cloudy, Christchurch > Lake Tekapo
After breakfast and final grocery shopping, we left Christchurch and went to Lake Tekapo. Was a sleepy three hour drive. Seafood basket at Doughboys for lunch. We then walked around the lake for scenic views and played stone skipping and throwing. It was actually fun. The winds here are very strong. Saw the Church of Good Hope too. Dinner was at Thai Tekapo, was not good. Planned for Dunedin.

30 June 2014, Clear, Lake Tekapo > Dunedin

I did not rest well because the room is not very well ventilated. We had to keep the windows closed for the heater to work efficiently. We woke up early and drove to Dunedin, stopped halfway at a cafe along the way. I got my regular flat white. We went into University of Otago to meet with Edmund's friend Li Kee, and she took us around the campus. We then tried to go for the train rides in Dunedin, but none suit us. We then went to Larnach Castle. It was beautiful, got some nice pictures. LiKee commented on how my pictures are always very nice. Dinner was at a very nice steak house. We then went up Signal Hill to get a glimpse of the night scenery of entire Dunedin. It was impressive indeed. Turned in for the night.

1 July 2014, Cloudy, Dunedin > Te Anau > Queenstown
Woke up late and left Dunedin for the long drive to Te Anau. We reached Te Anau and cooked our own lunch. Explored Lake Te Anau, looked at the fjord at ground level while exploring the area. Te Anau is beautiful, however, Edmund did not really appreciate the beauty. We then decided to forgo the rent and went straight to Queenstown for the night. It seems that Queenstown is beautiful too, but it was already nightfall and we can't see the surrounding and the lookouts. Dinner was Fergburger, awesome meal. We went into an Ice Bar, -8C, to have cocktail and be around ice sculptures. So, it was heard that it is going to snow, at -4C. We were really excited about the snow! Having budget constraints, we plan to luge tomorrow.

2 July 2014, Snow, Queenstown
Woke up slightly late and watched world cup over breakfast. It dragged a little. Don't you think it is a waste of time watching world cup on a trip? It started to snow slightly in Queenstown itself. We went up the gondola in Skyline Queenstown, to go up to take the luge. It snowed very heavily up in the mountains!

You can really see each crystal with the naked eye, provided they don't melt too quickly, how amazing is that! Made snowman. Seeing snow in my exchange is finally off the bucket list! . Tried the luge without gloves, and my hands felt like they don't belong to me anymore. Kept them safe from chill bane, fortunately. Lunch was at a mexican restaurant, okay prices, but small servings. We then drove out of Queenstown to Paradise, one of the scenes of Lord of the Rings. It was a scenic drive. It was paradise. Pictures cannot do it justice. Snowy mountains in the backdrop, horses, sheep and cows grazing around the grass. Serene peace. We drive back, in tired mood. We cooked our own dinner and then turned in for the night. I decided to check on my good friend Andy, who helped me a lot in this travel.

3 July 2014, Foggy, Queenstown > Auckland > Rotorua
We woke up rather early to return the car and catch our flight to realise that... it has been delayed! It was due to fog/snow/ice on runway. After wasting five hours in the airport, we are finally set to take off. North Island is very green from the sky. Landed and ate MacDonald's in the airport because we were too hungry, and while finding Jucy car rental, we found a rainbow. Jucy Auckland moved to Aintree Avenue, which caused us quite some trouble finding and ultimately getting the car! I realized the fuel isn't full, but I thought they are pretty lenient on that. Drove to Rotorua and was greeted by the sulphur smell. Did some groceries and cooked an awesome meal. The backpacker accommodation that we have in Rotorua is cheap, but yet the best one. We had the whole room to ourselves. There was only bath tub. Used it and enjoyed it, although it wasn't clean. A whole day of just waiting and travelling.

4 July 2014, Clear, Rotorua
We decided that we would split up today due to differing interests. After breakfast, we dropped Cheryl off at Agrodome, them went to Wai-o-Tapu thermal park. Although the smell is strong, the unique geothermal activities got me very excited. Got a lot of nice smoky pictures, craters, sulphur lakes, sulphur rock deposits and the famous Champagne pool!

This place was really a beautiful and curious place. I think the gases in the smoke caused us headaches. Bought oven mittens for Joyce here as an encouragement for her, a budding baker. We also visited the mud pools to see exploding mud. A very eye opening experience. Made a huge delicious lunch. Walked around Rotorua for a bit and found a parade happening in city centre. There was a ski rink, bumper car, and a large screen showing Frozen. What a find in the night! Made our own large late dinner again, then turned in for the night.

5 July 2014, Rain, Rotorua > Auckland
After eating own breakfast, we set off to see an important scene from Lord of the Rings: Hobbiton! The entire place was very nicely built. It was dreamy, and the whole place is like straight out from a game with good graphics. It was a pity it was a rather rainy day. Took a lot of beautiful game-like pictures.

Had a fast drink at Green Dragon Inn. The afternoon was spent in Hamilton, had a rather bad lunch, walked into Hamilton Gardens. It probably was not a good idea to visit the gardens in winter. I was not disappointed though, beautiful gardens. Drove back to Auckland after sun down, the drive reminds me of Singapore roads. Had a cheap, awesome, unhealthy dinner of chicken and chips, then rested for the night.

6 July 2014 Clear, Auckland > Sydney
The day is spent in Auckland. It did not go as well as we wanted it to be. Started the day by visiting Mount Eden, a non-active volcano. It sure has a large crater. We then visited One-tree Hill. It is amazing that there are a whole lot of sheeps (and shit) at the hill. I then drove to Auckland Skytower, went for a bit of looking, then ate lunch at a 'hawker centre'. We came back to find that our car has been booked for exceeding the parking time. We drove to return our car. The Jucy staff told me that the fuel isn't full. I argued that it wasn't even full in the first place, in fact, it was less than three quarters! Stupid Jucy Auckland, I'll remember you for that. First you move out of the airport and made yourself difficult to find, next you gave me a car that doesn't have full tank and expect it back full. We then arrived at the airport and hour and a half early before flight to find out that there is only one check-in counter for Jetstar, and the queue is very long. We made it about 2 minutes before check-in closes. Landed in Sydney slightly early and met up with Cherry, Andy and her parents for a last dinner together. The meal itself was very nice. However, many different things are going on for my two friends' minds. I had some hopes that I could at least meet Cherry alone, but that didn't happen. I did not manage to say a 'proper goodbye', if you know what I mean, because whenever the two of them are together, I can't do anything and Cherry becomes super passive. I would like to believe, in our minds, Cherry and I knows. Note to self not to let this happen on myself. Leaving Eastwood with regrets on the train. Had a slight rest for the next and last trip: Melbourne.

Fiji
Much credit for the success for this trip goes into the rash decision of booking the flight tickets! Of course, the event detail planning was done by Cherry's parents. This tour is unique in the sense that I travelled like an adult, not a backpacker. Money is spent mostly on food and accommodation rather than activities. A trip that will leave great and unforgettable memories with Cherry. We took many really cool pictures and I really liked them.

22 June 2014, Clear, Canberra > Sydney
It was difficult to say good bye to B & G. I was really sad and I hid all my emotions as I hugged people good bye. Deep inside though, it hurts knowing that I might not see many of the people here again. Good bye for now. Set off for Sydney for a night in 790 on George. The staff is very nice! Random dunner from the streets of Sydney Central Station.

23 June 2014, Cloudy, Sydney > Nadi
Woke up early to catch the flight to Fiji. The checking in at Fiji airport took 1.5 hours of waiting. I met Cherry's parents for the first time. The locals are very nice indeed, I have a feeling that I might just come back here in the future. Dinner was a seafood feast in a local canton restaurant: Sentai Seafood Restaurant. I really liked the fresh scallops. Along the way, nearly every Fijian assumed that Cherry and I are on a honeymoon, how funny, the hotel staff even gave us a basket of fruits! Too bad though, we are clearly just very good friends, always have to clear the misunderstandings. Had an early night since the past few nights were all short.

24 June 2014, Cloudy, Nadi > Mana Island
After waking up from a good sleep, we set off from Nadi to go to Mana Island. Had buffet lunch. We went scuba diving at the north side of Mana Island. The corals are really pretty and there are fishes here as well! It really is a tropical paradise. Time seems to past so fast. Before dinner, Cherry and I lied down on beach chairs and had a nice long chat. It seems that I will really miss times like this when we are away from each other. The sun gradually went down to reveal the stars and star dust. It really was a sight to behold, so Cherry and I got carried away again. It was a huge pity though, that my presence was wrong. Someone should have been here with her instead. Dinner was Ala carte at south beach restaurant. (Small) crab racing was on at night. There was just some magic watching how bids are taken and then the race itself. There is just so much beauty on the island, you can literally recharge your mana here. Enjoying it so much.

25 June 2014, Cloudy, Mana Island
Woke up with a good stretch at the beach. From the land, you can actually see how the corals break the large pacific waves and how they become small waves as they reach the island. In the morning, we first played at the slides. It was really fun! I got carried away and forgot to remove my spectacles before a jump, losing it to the depths. Fortunately, Cherry got the help of a local diver to retrieved. I was soooo relieved and grateful. We then went to look at the corals of the south side. I think corals on the south side are prettier, with many fishes as well. All of us were so obsessed with getting good pictures that we suffered many cuts and abrasions on our legs and arms. Well worth it for the beautiful pictures. Lunch was at north beach buffet again. Sent postcards. After a slight rest, we went kayaking. Cherry was a tad too confident and wanted to try a solo kayak. After a few fails at trying to control her kayak, she decided she have to do a 2-player kayak with me. Not as easy as it seems eh? We then went to catch sunset at sunset beach. People are hyped up at the view, however, I was not.

Okay so, it was quite nice after all. Dinner was at the same place. It was the first time I almost got angry with the Fijians. There were many people, but there was no sense of urgency from the staff at all. They served bun without water. They took so long to come take our order. I almost wanted to go scold their staff, but the atmosphere makes it difficult to do so. This is definitely going into the feedback. One of the staff tried t be nice to us though. On a side note, I made a conclusion from all the small talk over dinner. There is no one good parenting system. While Singapore taught me to be polite and considerate, China's parenting has taught Cherry ti be caring and have initiative to serve. After dinner, we went to watch traditional dance, followed by the Australian tradition: 'anyhow dance'. Be like an Australian and dance in the anyhow dance: achievement unlocked! Stars were crazily beautiful, star dust so visible.

26 June 2014, Clear, Mana Island > Nadi
While Cherry's family friends are still curious about the beauty of the corals, Cherry and I found it not worth the swimming and cuts anymore. Did some administrative stuff, accounts, then went to see the Chapel that caught Cherry's attention on the way to sunset beach yesterday. Weather was hot, but the clear sky actually helped us take great pictures along the way. More quality chatting time with Cherry, was enlightening from my viewpoint. I never knew I came this far in one year of opening up to the other half. Upon reaching the chapel, my recce skills were activated! We creeped into private property and took some very beautiful pictures with the chapel.

Went back to find the whole gang interested in the chapel, so we went back again in the hot sun. Took a full tour group picture. It really makes for a good family photo... Lunch was the buffet again. Took ferry back to Nadi island, Raffles Gateway Hotel. We taxi'ed out for time to buy souvenirs. Dinner was at the same place. Both Cherry and I agreed that we should not keep eating at the same seafood restaurant and should try some local Fijian food, but the more 'adult' adults made the decision. Cherry and I bought a local popsicle, which made her really happy. This dinner was great! The fish is really good and the lobster was really tasty!Being really nice, Cherry's parents let me eat the entire lobster head. They think I was too courteous. On the taxi back, I learnt that not all Fijians were nice after all. The taxi driver wanted to charge me $3 more for extra waiting. Had an early night.

27 June 2014, Clear, Nadi > Sydney
Woke up early in the morning to go fishing after a brief breakfast. Tried my hands at hand-line fishing for the first time. It is very exciting! Our boat was greeted by the beautiful rainbow sunrise. It was the brightest rainbow I have seen yet, with a triple rainbow. We had no luck with big fishes using trawl fishing, but we got many smaller ones using hand-line fishing. It is funny. You only need a fishing line, hook, and bait. All you need to do is to hook the bait, lower the line, and feel the line for a tug. The excitement when you feel the tug in the line! I caught a grouper, a very tasty fish! We all caught a total of 20 fish and released 1 because it was juvenile. I salute Cherry's dad for releasing that small fish for it to grow.We went back to Sentai to have the fish cooked. It was the first time I experienced eating fresh fish that we just caught, very fresh and tasty indeed. After the great fish meal, we headed back to the airport. There, I got Cherry some Fijian souvenirs. Time to do the crazy thing, hop on two international flights with 55 minute interval. I managed to do it, mainly because the plane I am taking from Fiji to Sydney is also the same plane that is flying from Sydney to Christchurch, one delay just led to another. It was a huge success and I am very lucky indeed. The awkward moment when the air stewardess recognized me in the second flight as the guy who dropped the boarding pass straight through the gap between the boarding gate and the plane. Onward to the next trip with my Singapore exchange friends in New Zealand!
24th Birthday
This year's 24th birthday was a really special one. It was the first time I have two home-made cakes from two sweet girls. I was really touched that I had both cakes. On 17th June, I cut a blueberry cheesecake made by Xinran, followed by a dinner at Nandos with 4 girls. We really make a gang, haha! On 21st June, some of us went to Golden Drum dimsum buffet. At night, I was asked to go to Andy's place. We drank rum, and ate the chocolate that Cherry (main baker) and Andy made. Some of the most interesting presents include a 'Happy Package' from Karen, and a Chinese fan from John Zhang. I was really touched. I was really lucky to celebrate my 24th on an exchange.

By the way, the post dragged so late because I went travelling and had no time to do it. Look for the next posts!

This morning at 3:00 AM, I was woken up by my close friend, family-like, a sister. She is going back home to Guangzhou and we won't be able to see each other and do things together for a while now. I am glad that she will visit Singapore some time, so it isn't good bye. We will say hello again with a warm cuddle. I will send you 1 post card for every destination I travel. I will miss the times we spent together in Tasmania and Canberra. May we meet again and travel together again, Li Xinran, Joyce.

Gold Coast
It was difficult to make this trip happen because of the assumptions and bad planning. What could I say... I still made it happen amidst the rush of the exams. A trip of discovery and learning as well. Credits goes to Cheryl Fong who initiated this trip.

13 June 2014, Cloudy, Coolongatta Airport > Mariner's Cove, Surfer's Paradise
Did not have proper rest because I was planning the events all the way till this date. Had an hour's rest before setting off on Murray bus to Sydney airport, then to Gold Coast's Coolangatta airport. Lunch was subway. We then made our way via bus to our first destination: Surfer's Paradise, Mariner's Cove. Since it was winter, surfing would be very cold, and no surfing was done. However, when we first saw the beaches, our jaws dropped.

The beach is so wide from the grass to the water, the length extends beyond what the eyes can see. What majestic beauty, Gold Coast. Pictures in a cloudy gloomy day do not do justice to your beauty. We walked in the rain and walked back, having dinner at Peter's Fish and Chips. Delicious. Night at YHA.

14 June 2014, Cloudy, Mariner's Cove > South Stradbroke Island > Mariner's Cove
This day was supposed to be the most extreme day I would ever have in my life, having sea plane and para-gliding in the itinerary. Took a ferry to the island and had a wonderful lunch. To our horror, Island Adventures did not offer them in this season. Determined not to let the trip to the island go to waste, we explored the island on foot, discovering 'An Island Hideaway', a wedding is going on! After that, we spontaneously went for a 4WD trip to the big beach in the island, the beautiful side of the island, according to the local guide;and played some sand boarding.

It was very fun indeed. We also missed the speed boating while being busy with the 4WD trip. Things did not go right today, really. We made a promise to ourselves that tomorrow would be better. We scraped animal watching (was lame) and decided to do more extreme stuff. Went for dinner by walking 40 minutes to a Japanese restaurant, surprisingly well decorated, very good soba noodles.

15 June 2014, Clear, Mariner's Cove > Coolongatta
It really went pretty extreme. We started the morning with Jet Skiing. People say no one doesn't smile on a Jet ski.

True enough, we went crazy with the Jet skiing, leaving us with crazy laughter, what an experience! Jet skiing is very addictive. We raced down Mariner's Cove with the winds blowing on us. A professional photographer on the water took a picture for us. Lunch was at a random cafe, but it turned out nice. We then traveled to Coolongatta and went for a helicopter ride near the airport. The pilot took us around the area and showed us some nice view from the bird's eye. Was really an eye opener.

Ended the day with another long walk towards a Chinese restaurant for dinner. Along the way, we caught beautiful sunset with Gold Coast CBD area in the backdrop. Always love sunset shots, no matter how cliche they are. At the restaurant, the black pepper combination turned out surprisingly nice.

16 June 2014, Clear, Coolongatta
Woke up and caught the flight back to Sydney domestic airport. We had to walk to Sydney International airport for the coach so that we save the $5.50. I have no idea what got into the blood of my travel mate, she believed google maps and took a crazy route even after me telling her that I walked the route before and knows a good route. Haiz, I wonder what I did wrong there to make her believe in a machine. Caught the Murray bus back, safe in Canberra.

I never learnt from my mistakes, and never will because I don't want to change what I consider as a strength that the other half of the population do not appreciate. I will repeated it again and again and continue to hurt myself every time, but never to lose the purity, getting more used to the pain. Since a decision has been made, I shall be a gentleman.

This post has been backdated for so long, finally have the chance to write about my travels, feelings, reflections and lessons.

Tasmania
A lot of credit for the success of the travels in Tasmania goes to my new found friend in B & G: Saif Khan, who did a lot of administrative planning and information gathering during the trip itself. I would also like to thank Cherry, who shared with me her experiences, little tips to travelling in Tasmania, and where the places that she thinks I would like. I would also never forget the warm-hearted Tasmanian locals who never failed to stop by and help whenever they sense that we are in some trouble. This trip was full of beautiful sceneries, unique experiences, and some good music. I also like to thank my travel buddies who are willing to travel with me so last minute, and taking pictures of each other along the way! Personally, I think the greatest accomplishment for myself was to be driving in a foreign land and return everything safely, with no accidents and fines, not forgetting the beautiful pictures taken as memory.

8 April 2014, Cloudy, Hobart Airport > Coles Bay, Wineglass Bay
This day brings a bad start to our travels. It showed me that planning for your trip in detail actually helps a lot! We started the day with a bus ride to the airport, reaching there in the wrong terminal and having to pay $5.50 for the bus to the other terminal to catching our flight. I know right! Why do they even charge money? Changi Airport's free Skytrain is way better! Upon reaching Hobart, we had to walk to take a bus to our car rental area. Due to improper planning, we had to walk 1 hour, and catch the public bus. It was goodwill, or that Tasmania is full of nice people, that we were offered a hitchhike to the car rental place. Really appreciate your help there, didn't manage to catch your name, but we really appreciate it a lot. Lesson learnt: rent your car at the airport. After getting the car, we traveled a few kilometers and ran out of fuel in a deserted place... Again, many people stopped by and asked what was wrong. While mishap was happening, I remembered to count my blessings that I have so many kind souls stopping by asking what is wrong with my car, while waiting for roadside assist to come. Dinner was at Mures Lower Deck, very tasty. Traveled to Coles bay at night and camped there.

9 April 2014, Cloudy, Wineglass Bay > St. Helens > Bay of Fires > Jeanneret Beach
Started the day wonderful, feeling fresh that the real fun of our trip is about to begin! Had breakfast by the beach, haha, what an enjoyment. The day was spent hiking up to the popular Wineglass Bay Lookout, then going down to Wineglass Bay itself to reach the sun, sand, waves, actually, cancel out the sun.

The anticipation of the beauty of Wineglass Bay made it slightly disappointing because of the cloudy weather. The bay itself however, was stunning. Rest of the day was spent driving to Bay of Fires and finally reaching Jeanneret Beach, where we spent the night. Reached early, played cards, and had a chat with my travel buddies.

10 April 2014, Clear, Jeaneret Beach > St. Helens > Launceston > Sheffield > Cradle Mountain
The weather actually turned better after those gloomy days. After chilling for a bit by Jeanneret beach, we decided that we had enough of seas and beaches. Drove to St. Helens where we ate breakfast, got some wifi, and recharged our stuff. Saif bought a CD with only one track, to tide us past times where we get no reception from the radio stations. We then started to travel towards Launceston, reaching at late noon.Lunch was kebabs. After restocking on supplies, we headed towards Sheffield, stopping by to take a look at the Murals, then to Cradle Mountain. The drive to Cradle Mountain was dangerous, if not hazardous. Fog, night, and mountainous roads, recipe for disaster. We made it however, and had a nice warm dinner at a campsite there. Did not rest well this night because it was raining and it was cold, and I was the only one sleeping in the tent. Ended up going to the kitchen to at least grab some rest in anticipation for the Cradle Mountain hike.

11 April 2014, Partly Cloudy, Cradle Mountain > Sheffield
We kind of overslept a little and hence could not make it if we take the full hike to Cradle Mountain Summit. We still chose a rather difficult route, which is to Marion's Lookout and Dove Lake circuit. The hike was good since we rested a lot on the way by taking pictures. The pictures...

They speak a lot about the beauty of Cradle Mountain area. I myself was totally astounded by the view, pristine untouched nature. This day was the day where I took the most pictures, and it only gets better. The night was spent in Sheffield, as illegal campers. Saif bought a very nice CD this time, and I am very thankful for this move!

12 April 2014, Partly Cloudy, Sheffield > Launceston
We sent 2 of our travel buddies off to Launceston Airport. Goodbyes are always hard. After that, me and Xinran made our plans to travel as two people. We visited Cherry Road, for the sake of our good friend Cherry, to show her that she owns a road in Tasmania, and it was a road of nice houses, not cherry trees. Lunch was at a cafe in Launceston, was not too bad. Drove to the motel and took a good nap (haha albeit waste, but we need the rest). Fish and chips with cucumber for dinner. I had long chats with Xinran, so got to know her a lot more. First time sleeping in a King size bed, where I only occupied 1/3 of the space that is closer to Xinran.

13 April 2014, Clear, Launceston > New Northfolk > Hobart
Hey, hey, hey, it's a beautiful day, as so the singer in the new CD goes, Xinran's favourite track. Started the day perfect and in happy spirits as we traveled from Launceston to New Northfolk. Lunch was chicken and chips with cherry tomatoes. Notice how I always try to balance the meal haha. New Northfolk is just like another Tasmanian town, chilling and relaxing. The next half of the day was a nightmare. We went round and round around Hobart vicinity so as to find a car wash place, at the 5th try, we managed to find one that actually is a proper car wash facility. Was already tired and destroyed from travelling here and there. Made the car clean again, then drove down to Mures for dinner. Dinner was seafood platter for 2, and more oysters :D. Love the oysters there, they are fresh till you can still taste the salty tang of the sea. On a side note, Xinran is disappointed with me today. She has good driver for a father, but does not understand that there are certain places where if you are already on that lane, you HAVE to turn there although it is wrong, and some places cannot turn right because the road simply doesn't have the right turning lane, usually because it is a 270 degree or more right turn. Fails of driving in unknown roads. Night was spent in a motel nearby Hobart.

14 April 2014, Clear, Hobart > Richmond > Hobart Airport
I would say, this is one of the most pleasant days spent in Tasmania. Relaxing drive to Richmond. Richmond is my favourite little town in Tasmania because of its beautiful old style architecture, good food, and shops. Visited the famous oldest bridge in Australia and had lunch in Richmond Bakery and Cafe. Tried their iconic Curry Scallop Pie, simple excellence. Bought ice cream and candy at the old style sweets shop called Sweets and Treats, never forgetting Cherry Rock candy for our close friend. Part of what was enjoyable is admittedly, also, travelling as a platonic pair. After the great recharge from Richmond, we made our way to return the rented car. After saying last goodbyes to our little Red, and professional GPS Navi Tom Tom, we started another arduous journey without a car, towards Hobart airport. To our horror, the bus that we planned to take only comes after 3 hours. Attempts to hitch-hike failed this time haha! We ended up taking a taxi to the hotel. Dinner was noodles, try to finish up all the groceries we bought in Tasmania so that there's no waste. The milk became a slight laxative. That probably sums up my Tasmania trip, a round island trip in 8 days.

15 April 2014, Clear, Hobart Airport > Acton (Home)
Flight from Hobart airport back to Canberra. I suddenly have this feel that B & G has became a home. I am coming home. I am not sure why. It might be due to the relationships with the people here. Canberra has also turned slightly cold.

Sydney
An impromptu trip with totally no plans at all, this trip to Sydney was inspired by Andy going back to Sydney to visit his family, while going back in the same car with Daniel, Andy's close friend when he is doing is undergraduates. A lot of credit is given to Andy himself, for the success and impeccable time, location, and space sense in this short and condensed trip. I totally destroyed my legs with the 3 days of walking, however.

17 April 2014, Clear, Acton > Dickson > Sydney CBD
The morning was spent Yum Cha with the senior cooking group. The Dim Sums were of pretty good quality, and it does remind me of what Dim Sum tastes like back in Singapore. Best of all the price is not a scam. Thanks to Cherry (again, I have many reasons to be appreciative) for the recommendation. After the really satisfying meal, Daniel, Andy and me set off for Sydney CBD, with Daniel taking the wheel because it was his car. Being super tired due to the travels, I fell asleep and was unable to keep the conversation to keep the driver awake in the long drive. Sorry! Upon reaching, I started exploring the vicinity of Sydney CBD, Central Station. Accommodation was Bounce, Backpacker accommodation, in a 8 man room, correction, there were also 4 girls in the same room. How their bras were around the room was slightly disturbing. Accommodation would be totally good other than the fact that there was a musty smell in the room. Note: Sick Building Syndrome potential.

18 April 2014, Clear, Sydney CBD > University of Sydney > Newtown > Sydney Harbour Bridge > Opera House > Royal Botanical Gardens > Darling Harbour > Chinatown
Just by looking at the places traveled in one day, you would already know that this itinerary was hell of an eventful one. It was planned by Andy, with times attached to each location. Without much effort in time keeping, we actually obeyed the times pretty well. University of Sydney has beautiful old style architecture, explicit in detail. Lunch was Pad Thai in Thai-La-Ong1, another remembrance of Singapore food. Traveled to the iconic places of Sydney in tourist mode. Caught a beautiful sunset at Royal Botanic Gardens.

Went to Darling Harbour, where we bought Gelatissimo ice cream. Side note: Andy doesn't share ice cream, a very unique character different from most other friends, because he will feel guilty for eating too much of the share. Gosh, the savings that we could have made. Dinner was settled at Chinatown night market (only on Fridays). Ate Japanese Seafood Ball, assorted dim sums, di wang bing, gong cha. The gong cha tastes the same as in Singapore, although 2x more expensive. Well worth it.

19 April 2014, Clear, Taronga Zoo
Sent out 5 postcards, one as remembrance for myself, and 4 to other significant friends. Being in tourist mode again, me and Andy spent the entire day at Taronga Zoo of Sydney. To many people, the zoo is a boring place to visit. Truth be told, it will be boring if you don't know what to do. If you actually go for the talks by the zookeepers, they will tell you more information about the animal, as well as feed them, so you get to see them in action. Caught 2 performances, namely Seals and Birds. Seal performance is highly recommended, the seals are very well trained and the show is very very enjoyable. Bird Show is very entertaining as well. I really wonder how they trained the animals and get the timing so correct. What I love about the performances too was that they always end it off with environmental sustainability, totally in sync with my personal beliefs. Had laksa for dinner, surprisingly similar in quality as compared to that found in Singapore food courts.

20 April 2014, Clear, Sydney's Coastal areas.
Today is a day where I have decided to have a solo trip: walk totally alone by the coastal areas of Sydney for 18 km, in slippers so I can play in the sand and sea water. This gives me time to relax and get away from the busy life, as well as reflect upon myself, the things I have done in the past years, recent exchange, recent failures, what I regret doing, what I should have done better, what should I do to make myself a better person. I am constantly trying t o figure this out actually. It also made me realize what kind of travelling I like best: group, duo, or alone. Each have their own advantages though. For one, if I were to type out all the names of the beaches and reserves I visited today, it is going to be a hell of a list. Upon reaching each beach or nice spot, I would stop and chill and relax for a bit. Started the walk in Trennery Reserve, then continuing on to Grant Reserve, then reaching Coogee Beach. The water is clean, but very cold! Continued walking to Gordon's bay, which was basically a bay with some rocks. Next was an unnamed beach (I forgot). It was actually very beautiful, the locals designed it very well to attenuate the waves when it comes in so that the inside was a very good swimming pool. Continued the walk and entered a cemetery by the coast. Remarkable idea. I made a point to keep silent and discreet as I walked past it, paying respect, however, the people around me did not think the same way. Exiting the cemetery brings me to Bronte beach, another wave paradise where surfers are spotted, and the water is cold, as usual. After walking through another unnamed park, I reached Marks Park and Hunter Park. In one of the park benches, there was a note which says: There's nothing as nice as someone who shares your laughter, your secrets, your wishes and cares, someone who is there through good times and tears, who stays by your side as your friend throughout the years. Beautifully written. Part of me starts reflecting on whether I really do have such a friend. The altruistic me is too keen on giving so much so that people take me for granted, would I really find such a friend? Next destination is the iconic Bondi beach! Bondi beach is the largest beach that I have ever seen, taking a while to actually walk across the entire beach, and not mentioning the sad area is huge. Stopped and looked at the people playing so joyfully around me, and at the same time curious about what the others think of a lone traveler walking lengthwise across the beach, straddling the reach of the waves. Grabbed a sandwich and continued walking to Hugh Bamford reserve, which is basically just a patch of green. Walked across rich people's places and wondered what it takes to actually live in such a place. Dreams. Long and painful walk to Rodney Reserve, then Dover Heights reserve, where a cliff-edge walk commences. Just off the side, I found a secret hiding place which takes you directly to the edge of the cliff. It is actually possible to go down the cliff into a secret hiding cave. It makes for a perfect getaway spot, where only someone as lonesome as me would actually like. Continued the walk to Diamond Bay Reserve, Clarke Reserve, then to Christiston Park, then Lighthouse Reserve, Signal Hill Reserve, and then finally reaching Watson's Bay. Now if you are following, you finally realize why I cannot write down the places I visited in the title. The view at Watson's bay was stunning as well. In the evening sun, the colours of the horizon changes. The view of the CBD as the backdrop is magnificent.

Had Connoisseur ice-cream, and a good well deserved seafood meal at Doyles. Made acquaintances there. Took a ferry back to Circular Quay and headed back to the hostel. This basically summed up how I spent my two week break.

I always make the same mistake. It is said that once bitten, twice shy. I think I will never learn from my mistakes though, because that involves changing a part of me which I always believe that it is a positive side. I will stay who I am, never be suayed, and if that makes me be alone, so be it. I am designed to be alone without need and burden, explore different places alone. I am only starting.

So, it all still boils down to a point where a decision has to be made.

A close friend that I made here advises me to count my blessings, and I really will.

I have not been travelling much. Feeling like I should be travelling more, like, almost every weekend, but I have no idea, don't know the means of how to travel.

The last Sunday were bad days because of many bad incidents. Firstly, I cut myself while chopping up shallots :( Secondly, the trip me and my NUS friends went together on ended up with us going to visit a house that has nobody inside instead of a winery that we were supposed to find. Thirdly, I lost my student card while on the trip. Fourthly, we got asked for Proof of Age while getting alcohol, and all of it was confiscated when only one of us could not prove our age >.> Went back to my hall feeling very sad.

Me eating alone sadly has drawn a rather big crowd of people to eat together in the same table. Of course, I had to hide the sadness lingering in my heart. This is when my new good friend appeared. We talked to each other, I shared my troubles and bad events that happened. She told me to count my blessings and bad luck to not last. We talked for a long time, it made me feel much better, so I decided to reward her with me cooking for dinner.

However, things took a turn today. Today was a great day indeed! I received an e-mail saying that somebody picked up my card and wants to return it to me! It made me really happy to see that card again. Thank you, guy who returned my Student Card. Dinner was great as well. I finally succeeded in making the baked rice that I have always wanted to make. The people around me tried and liked it as well, I was so elated. My good friend liked it a lot as well, as evidently seen in the speed she finished her somewhat small portion.

I will know to count my blessings. You have bad days, that's okay. You have good days, appreciate them. Thank you, to my angel that made my exchange life so much better. Let me contribute back to your life.

Saturday, March 15, 2014

Too many things have been happening and the post dragged. A semester when the nerd decides to give no heck about his research assignments due this week.

Balloon Spectacular
was not as spectacular as we expected since the balloons went off one by one. Was with XiaoJuan and Cheryl. A nice picture was not possible since you actually are surrounded, 360 degrees, with hot-air balloons! Would actually be nicer if you ARE inside one of those balloons, but it costs 300 AUD per person, so... we visited Old Parliament House of Australia instead.

Symphony by the Park
This was the first time I actually experienced live concert performance outdoors. Was with Cherry, Xinran, Andy. It was super entertaining because I simply love the music. I was amazed by how the entire orchestra could play in perfect synchronization with a cartoon showed on the big screen. Very entertaining night, also partly because of what happened that night after the performance hee hee.

Canberra Lights
This was one event that we dragged so long because of the weather. Was with Raad. Gloomy rainy weather didn't deter us on the last day of the event where we went to the Parliament House to catch the last few moments of Canberra Lights, projection on buildings and spectacular light shows.

Black Mountain Hike
Today, after staring out of my window everyday at the tower, we, XiaoJuan, Andy, William, finally decided to hike up Black Mountain, 812m above sea level, to Telstra Tower, a local telco company tower. Was easier than expected, but to our disappointment, all the places with good views are cordoned off. Still an accomplishment anyhow :D

Skyfire 2014
Was pretty bored with all the performances (to be a tad too honest). I was only here for the fireworks! We got a really good seat, or a spot of grass, rather, with Cherry and Yang. The fireworks above Lake Burley Griffin lasted 18 mins. It was simply a huge feast for the eyes (though the background music is pretty irritating). You really have to be there and experience the whole atmosphere yourself! A sample of a snapshot, high quality video in my laptop.

Went back to B&G kitchen after that. I then made the conclusion that a person should not prepare food at night! Haha!

One thing that I am glad about, was that I go for events with different people, enhancing interaction, oh and, who says Canberra is a boring city?

School
So, it was the end of Week 2. Not much stories to share because I haven't been travelling as much as I wanted to. I have been studying more than what I should be. I want to travel around and do things more exciting,  but how? I haven't been doing it. A very good friend actually agreed to lend me her bike, so now I became more mobile, which is a great thing because it really speeds things up a lot. Great, so that's 1 step towards travelling!

Cooking
Bought a whole lot of groceries today, fish and meat and very happy with it. Feeling excited about what I should cook with them. Plans include Baked Rice and Spaghetti. Today, I cooked Tom Yum, as well as sambal prawns. Seems like my cooking is really going to improve :)

Friday, February 21, 2014

Today is Friday, and it is the night. Tomorrow is the weekend and nothing was planned. This week was the first week of school and whoosh, it just went past so quickly.

School
For those who think that Australian education is slack and laid back, I have to tell you now that this isn't the case. It is only the first week and there are marked assessments and tutorials, and they are OMG... Let's just let the picture do the talking about what kind of assignments they have in ANU. Still pretty tired and traumatized at it (though I finished it anyway and was proud of it). And I thought I would never see Taylor series, geometric series again...

D3 Floor Party!
There's one thing that NUS can learn from ANU, just a suggestion since I really enjoyed it. For the halls of ANU, senior residents of each level are given an amount of money to organize a floor party where everyone living on that floor would come together for activities. This promotes interaction and well-being within the community. It is a really good time for neighbours to get together and understand each other, especially so when you have a really international and diverse culture. I really enjoy such social activities where people just come together and talk and socialize (although I am introverted). Our party was a hot plate BBQ (Australian style) and get together at a fire-pit. This is, of course, very different from how we do things in Singapore. Basically, their BBQs are done over a hot plate (not the usual charcoal fire, though I still think charcoal fire food taste better), and then all the food are brought over to the fire pit. Marshmallows end off the activity.
